Think about the latest blog you read. Do you remember all the little photos next to the blog comments? Have you left a comment on a blog and wished that your photo showed up too, but instead only a blank box or placeholder image showed up? I was chatting with a friend the other day and she asked me how people get their photo to show up? I mean seriously, wouldn’t it be great if your photo showed up each time you left a comment on someone else’s blog too?
Well guess what? Your photo can show up too! Those little photos are called Gravatars, and you can get your own in less than five minutes.
But wait! Why is it called a Gravatar? Well, the word Gravatar stands for “Globally Recognized Avatar,” which basically means it is an avatar that is tied to your email address and recognized across the internet. Officially, a Gravatar is an image that follows you from site to site appearing beside your name when you do things like comment or post on a blog.
And, why should you get a Gravatar? That’s easy! Not only does commenting on blogs help build your online visibility, but it is also a smart and simple way to become part of a community online. When you comment and interact with a blogger often, the chance of you getting noticed skyrockets, and having a photo right there next to your comment provides and instant visual for the reader. Visuals and photos enhance the feelings of recognition and make people feel like they know you already!
To get your own Gravatar, go to http://en.gravatar.com/site/signup/ and enter your email address in the box. You’ll need to verify your email address and then the site will walk you through creating your Gravatar step by step. Just remember to have a photo of yourself ready to upload. (Hint: Use the same photo that you use on Facebook and Twitter for consistency and added recognition.)
