Yesterday, I had the opportunity to chat with Kyle Maurer for the WP Roundtable podcast. Our conversation was really organic and natural and it covers some WordPress, some business, some personal stuff that I’ve never shared in an interview before.
I’m not sure how much caffeine I drank the day we recorded this interview, but this is probably my most honest, animated, candid, and feisty interview ever.
We kicked off the episode with our “Quick Picks Of The Week” — or things found around the web that viewers might be interested in:
- Kyle shared a post about preferred language research for WordPress.
- I shared a new find for me, the ZenFounder Podcast.
Then we dove into my background, and this isn’t another discussion about my starting Bourn Creative, but about my discovery of what graphic design is, that is was a valid career choice, and how I got started in design. We also talk about my most embarrassing job and why I’ll never take credit for the work done there, and the things that eventually led to my ability to venture out on my own to start Bourn Creative — and why it wasn’t even my own idea.
We talk about how I juggled working long hours from home with two young children, why day care wasn’t an option for us, and the mistakes I made when first getting started, as well as how I made the transition from print design to web design, how Brian completely changed careers, and what it took for him to quit his job and join Bourn Creative full time.
We also discuss my struggles with Bright Shiny Object Syndrome, its negative and positive effects, and how I deal with it. I share the moment that I abandoned BSOS to focus solely on improving my skills, providing amazing service, creating amazing brands and websites for our clients, and working with clients we truly love working with and how it helped shape the Bourn Creative brand. And speaking of the Bourn Creative brand, we also get into branding, focusing branding over marketing, and why branding matters.
