As a business that blogs, I am surrounded by other businesses that blog. I live in the space where all businesses blog — don’t they? Nope. More businesses don’t blog than do blog. It’s just easy to forget that fact when you live in the blogosphere every day.
We’re a Sacramento design studio, and the other day I was searching online for other Sacramento businesses that blog for business — not businesses that have PR firms updating their blog with mediocre content all about them, but businesses in the Sacramento region who “get” what blogging is all about and maintain thriving, consistently updated blogs. The results of my search were dismal at best.
We may be a design studio located in Sacramento, but because of our blog, we have readers and visitors to our website from all over the world, which translates into businesses all over the United States and world reaching out to us to design and build their websites. Just last week we received contact form inquiries from business owners in New York, the UK, Iraq, Canada, Houston, Las Vegas, Orlando, San Diego, Los Angeles, and Australia.
With these types of results possible from blogging for business, I am baffled why more business owners don’t do it.
Why Don’t Businesses Blog?
But then I reached out to several business owners I know that have yet to start blogging and their responses were almost all the same:
- I don’t know what to say.
- What if I say the wrong thing.
- I don’t want to be judged.
- What if I run out of things to say.
- I don’t have time.
- But there are people and experts who know more than I do.
- I don’t want to look stupid.
Business Owners Are Afraid To Blog
The bottom line is that business owners are afraid to jump into the blogging waters. Are you one of the business owners who fear blogging?
If so, stop! There is no reason to be afraid of starting a business blog. By letting your fears stop you, you’re missing out of thousands of dollars of potential sales, and a priceless number of opportunities to connect with other amazing business owners.
Beat the Fear of Blogging
Here’s my advice to help you beat the fear of blogging for business:
- Just get started!
Publishing your first post will be the hardest, so get started and just take it one post at a time.
- Be forgiving of yourself. It’s inevitable that at some point, you’ll publish a post with typos, a broken link, or some other mistake. It happens to the best of us! Just fix the mistake quickly, learn from it, forgive yourself, and move forward.
- Practice, practice, practice!
The more you blog the easier it will be. You need to give it some time to find your blogging groove and to really find your voice. Believe me, very few (if any) bloggers consider their first blog post a good one, but everyone has to start somewhere.
- Know that your voice will evolve over time!
Most business owners start out publishing very professional, vanilla, corporate, politically correct content. But over time, as you discover your voice and get more comfortable being in the spotlight, your point of view will become more prevalent and you will begin to get more interesting, spicy, and personal in your writing.
- Read and comment on other blogs!
Get in the game. Read other blogs to see how they write, how they structure their posts, how they invite people to leave a comment, etc. And become part of the blogging community by commenting and joining in the conversation. I think you’ll be surprised that bloggers of all types are supportive of each other in a big way.
Remember: There will always be someone who knows more than you do about what you do. Don’t worry about it. Learn from those people and don’t let them stop you from sharing your knowledge because there will also always be people who know less than you and they will appreciate you sharing your expertise with them.
Now what about you? Do you blog for business? Did you experience any apprehension about starting your blog? I’d love to hear your thoughts below!
