Live near Sacramento and want to learn more about WordPress? Check out the Sacramento WordPress Meetup group — and I don’t just say that because Brian and I are two of the co-organizers.
The Sacramento WordPress Meetup happens the first Tuesday of every month and has grown into a great community of designers, developers, consultants, copywriters, bloggers, business owners, and end users. We meet for informal networking at 6:30 pm, get started with out talks at 7:00 pm, and get anywhere from 25-50 attendees.
The meetup operates on a four month cycle, with the general format of:
- A developer focused talk (about 45 minutes)
- A designer/user focused talk (about 45 minutes)
- Lightning talks (3-4 talks, about 7-10 minutes each)
- A happiness bar / workshop style event (give & get help)
September Featured Lighting Talks
Our September WordPress Meetup featured lightning talks, each about 10 minutes long, including:
Getting WordPress Help: How To Create A Great Support Request by Kevin Marsden, Automattic
Kevin covered what you should and should not do when submitting a support ticket, and shared how to create a great support ticket that can get answered quickly when you run into a WordPress problem.
Improving Page Speed in WordPress by John Locke, Lockedown Design
John covered steps you can take to improve your page speed, such as hosting, caching plugins, CDNs, minification, image optimization, and theme optimization.
Meet Pushup by Jake Goldman, 10Up
Jake gave us a quick look at how online storytellers are using PushUp Notifications — a push notification service designed by 10up for WordPress — to increase engagement with their audience.
October Featured Two Short Talks
Our October WordPress Meetup featured two 20-30 minute talks from co-organizers Joe Boydston and Brian Bourn.
Joe Boydston of Automattic gave us An Introduction To WordPress Multisite, walking attendees through how multisite works, how to set it up, how themes and plugins work across a multisite network, and how to map domain names.
Bourn Creative’s Brian Bourn, presented a WordPress Site Design Case Study, walking the audience through the strategy, design, and development of the Just Ahead iOS App marketing site.
November Covered the WordPress JSON REST API
The November WordPress Meetup featured a technical talk by Vasken Hauri, Vice President of Engineering from 10Up on an Intro to the WordPress JSON REST API.
The WP JSON REST API offers exciting possibilities for expanding how and where WordPress data will be shared, consumed, and managed across the web and beyond. By adding a robust RESTful API using the popular JSON format, WordPress is taking the next step towards becoming not just a blogging tool, but a truly powerful content management system.
December Is Happiness Bar Style
Our December WordPress Meetup is another Happiness Bar-style, Hands On Workshop.
Bring your laptops, your expertise, and your questions. Everyone has the opportunity to give and get help at this meet up event. This will be your opportunity to get one-on-one, and small group help on your WordPress project. Whether you’re trying to conquer a problem with WordPress, or just looking for a recommended plug-in, our members are a wealth of knowledge.
Plus, we’ll have pie. That’s right. I’m baking some of my favorite pies (and Costco will be helping too) so we can all enjoy some holiday sustenance while we work!
We Need Speakers For 2015
Besides the workshop / co-working format planned, we will also be holding conversations about future WordPress Meetups & WordPress events in the Sacramento area for our group. If you are interested in getting involved or want to speak at a future event, but aren’t quite sure of the next steps, this will be the time to show up and ask any questions, or step up and volunteer.
Can’t make it but want to get involved or help out? Interested in presenting a full talk or lightning talk? Please contact us today, as we’re currently planning and booking speakers for our 2015 events.
