How I got my first client, where I go to find clients, and which should come first — the website or marketing and branding or marketing, are just a few of the things I share in my interview on Born to Influence, The Marketing Show.
Born To Influence, hosted by Mette Muller and Esther Kiss is for entrepreneurs and business owners looking to build a legacy. The show, published daily, Monday through Saturday, features expert interviews on business and marketing. Each episode is guaranteed to include actionable advice that works — so you can apply it in your business immediately.
I am excited to share this interview with you! Esther was a great host, and we get pretty candid on what goes on behind the scenes of a successful business.
I hope you listen to the two-part interview in iTunes and find a few golden nuggets of wisdom to help you build a successful business.
Born to Influence Interview: Episode 112
My two-part interview kicks off with questions about how I got started in business, how I got started with WordPress, and how we approach niche marketing and ideal clients. I share the true details of starting Bourn Creative back in 2005 — at my kitchen table, on a PC laptop that weighed a ton, using pirated software, with my printer and fax machine on a 6-ft folding table from Costco. Plus, I share the real story about how I learned web design.
The journey wasn’t glamorous, and it definitely wasn’t always pretty, but it worked and it got me to where I am today.
Esther asks about live events, networking, and why we make it a point to get out from behind our computers. In the interview, I share the types of events we go to, why we “tag team” events, and why meeting people face to face, in person can dramatically accelerate your success.
I also share some of my own personal strategies on how to get the most out of an event, to make the best connections, to generate the most (qualified) leads, and how to remove the pressure from networking and making new connections.
Born to Influence Interview: Episode 113
Part-two of my interview kicks off with questions about the biggest milestones in growing Bourn Creative, and conversation about what I had to do to get my first clients and how I had to make a mindset shift from “freelancer” to “business owner.” We also chat about being a “cash-only” business and how we fund growth and re-invest in our business without incurring debt.
We discuss our belief that branding should always come before marketing, why Bourn Creative has always focused on branding first and marketing second, and how a brand first approach has helped build a rock solid reputation in our market.
With Born to Influence’s focus on leaving a legacy and making an impact, it’s only natural that eventually the conversation turned to how business owners can make the biggest impact and help more people.
We cover why businesses should give away their best information and tips, how it can lead to more clients, more referrals, and more brand evangelists, and why you shouldn’t worry about “giving it all away for free” causing you to lose sales.
Now, if you sell a tangible product with hard costs, I know listening to strategies about content marketing and information marketing can be frustrating because it’s tough to see how they also apply to your business. Esther takes your concerns into account with a couple questions specifically about product based business marketing strategies — and how to do give-aways if you sell physical goods.
Finally the interview wraps up with us looping back to live events, and what you can do to increase awareness for your brand and generate more leads at an event.
I share my favorite marketing piece to take with me to live events (that attendees rave about), ideas on how to stand out at events, and an example of how one of our clients fills her pipeline by putting a twist on the traditional business card give at events.
