Recently I wrote the post 5 Marketing Tips to Build a Referral Based Business, covering some of the lessons I have learned by building a successful referral based business.
And as I was formatting the post, I came up with even more marketing tips to help you build a referral based business too — Four more tips to be exact. These tips focus more on communicating with your referral partners and/or affiliates, rewarding people who refer new business to you, and even some things to watch out for when working with referral clients. Hope you enjoy!
Here are 4 more marketing tips to build a referral based business:
Referral Marketing Tip 6: Send a referral letter to your list, educating them about your offerings and asking them for referrals
One extremely effective way to ask for referrals is through a warm letter or an outreach letter. Think of it like those Christmas letters some people send — the ones that are well done. Include in the letter updates on what’s new with your company, share with them your services, products, and programs, as well as who your ideal clients are. Then ask them if they know of anyone who would be a great fit and invite them to make a referral. If you have and affiliate program or offer referral rewards, mention them in the PS section! Another great referral letter formula is to first share the biggest challenge your clients face, then share the solutions you offer and the big results your clients get, then invite recipients to share the love and refer their friends or family who may be a great fit.
Referral Marketing Tip 7: Referrals put reputations at risk. Always deliver and make your referral partners look good
You must understand that when someone refers a friend, peer, or client to you, they are putting their reputation and the trust that has been built with their contact on the line. If you provide a great experience for their referral, you’ll make them look good and they will be appreciated and thanked — the relationship will be strengthened. But if you don’t deliver, you’ll make them look bad for referring you and your actions will reflect negatively on their reputation.
Referral Marketing Tip 8: Communicate often with referral partners and affiliates. Give them tools and help to refer business to you
If you want to build an active referral network with engaged partners who are excited about referring business to you, keep in contact with them! Communicate with them about your launches, sales, services, and products. Keep them in the loop and make sure they are the first to know about changes in your business and new special referral opportunities. Provide them with pre-written emails, ezine blurbs, solo blasts, social media posts, and blog posts, as well as various sizes of graphics and advertisements they can use on their websites, blogs, email newsletters, and more.
Referral Marketing Tip 9: Don’t forget to thank your referral sources and make them feel appreciated and valued
You don’t need to have an affiliate program to create a strong referral program. You just need to make sure that your referral partners feel appreciated, acknowledged, valued, and loved — and that doesn’t always have to be in terms of cash or check. Thank your referrals partners with a special gift at the holidays, look up their birthdays on Facebook and send them a birthday gift. When they refer a new client, send them a thank you card and maybe a thank you gift. And if you’re just starting out and you don’t have the budget to send gifts, that’s okay! A simple, heart-felt, hand-written thank you note goes a long way!
