WordPress Web Design: Four New Genesis WordPress Sites Live

Sacramento WordPress Website Design

With business events, entrepreneurial conferences, software conferences, our local Sacramento WordPress Meetup group, and a few WordCamps, Brian and I have been traveling a lot the past few months. Then when you throw in all our normal client work, and running our own business, things get a little crazy and the hours behind our computers get a little long.

Luckily we LOVE what we do — and we LOVE the Internet.

In the past four weeks, we have taken four different Genesis WordPress sites live — Cool right?! Here they are:

A Behind the Scenes Look at a WordPress Website Makeover

Today's Innovative Woman Magazine WordPress Website MakeoverRecently we launched a brand new custom WordPress website for Today’s Innovative Woman, and wanted to share some of the behind the scenes strategy for the site and insight into why we built it the way we did.

At Bourn Creative we view the primary role of design as problem solving. While the visual look and feel is important, it must first and foremost support the overall site strategy.

Today’s Innovative Woman is a magazine for women entrepreneurs and business owners with print distribution of more than 10,000, visibility at events around the country, and a strong online community.

While the original WordPress theme worked great when the magazine was first launched, Today’s Innovative Woman was was quickly outgrowing the site. With a booming community, growing subscriber base, and influx of guest writers and featured experts, not only did publisher Cathy Alessandra need a new custom WordPress site, but she needed a whole new online strategy!

What Your “WordPress Consultant” Isn’t Telling You (About WordPress)

Lies Your WordPress Consultant Is Telling You And Why You Shouldn't Listen to ThemSo I’ve got a pet peeve, and I’ll admit, that may not be a big surprise if you’re a regular reader of our blog!

I get irritated when people who need help turn to consultants — supposed experts — for help and are misled or fed incorrect or outdated information simply because the consultant doesn’t know the answer and they don’t want to admit it.

This drives me especially CRAZY in the WordPress world. Lies, myths, untruths, and false information about WordPress is being fed to business owners left and right — and it’s perpetuating false beliefs.

Let me explain. I LOVE WordPress. All of our sites are built for WordPress and I love the fact that it allows our clients to have total control over their websites. But this ability comes at a price.

Now anyone can open a hosting account, install a theme, and plop in a custom header can call themselves a WordPress web designer or WordPress consultant. There are even some calling themselves WordPress developers that can’t even read PHP!

Why? Because WordPress is a “Hot Topic” for entrepreneurs who want to start online businesses. And for some “Hot Topics” mean easy and fast cash.

11 Ways to Screw Up Your WordPress Site

How to Screw up Your WordPress WebsiteAs the most widely used content management system on the web, WordPress is a fairly simple, easy to use platform. WordPress allows website owners to make most website content changes and updates without having to learn how to code HTML.

We LOVE the fact that all of our clients can update their own websites and add new pages and content themselves whenever they want — that’s why we build all of our custom websites on the WordPress platform.

But as easy as WordPress is to use, you can still screw up your site big time if you aren’t careful!

You see, WordPress gives you access to all areas of your site — content, code, functions, design files — and some of them you just shouldn’t mess with unless you really know what you’re doing.

And We’re Live With A New Custom WordPress Child Theme On The Genesis Framework

Bourn Creative Is a Custom WordPress Website Built as a Child Theme for the Genesis Framework for WordPressWelcome to our new website!

I’m *laughing* because this is the first headline I see pretty much all business owners use as their very first blog post on a new website. Even though this isn’t a new website, we have given ourselves an upgrade!

We did a full website redesign, but we overhauled what’s underneath the pretty exterior too!

At Bourn Creative, all of our client WordPress websites are custom child themes on the Genesis Framework and we figured that it’s about time we switched our own site over to Genesis as well.

Along with the full website redesign and recoding to move the custom child theme to Genesis, we’ve been hard at work on several other major upgrades and additions.

Want to know EXACTLY what went into this go-live …

Here’s a list of what went into the creation of our new site

Juggling Business and Family

Vacation From Business

This summer has been jam-packed with fun! We kicked it off by renting a house in San Francisco, then we camped in Santa Cruz, and we just got back from a fantastic vacation house in San Diego right on Mission Beach — And mixed in there were dance camps, play dates, barbecues, movies, and lots of play time with the grandparents.

Summer is definitely a time of year where juggling your business and family is a primary focus for most business owners, especially with the kids on their summer break. The key for Brian and I is understanding ourselves and our kids behavior styles. For example …

Both Brian and I are morning people. We love to get up early and because we are the most productive in the mornings, we keep that time open and free from interruptions as much as possible. So most of the time our kiddos wake up and play for a couple hours together before even coming down stairs to eat breakfast.

The mid-afternoon is when things start to get more interesting. That’s when our productivity wanes and the kids get restless. So we schedule most of our phone calls, meetings, and other appointments for the afternoon, and when we plan activities for the kids, which works out great for all of us.

Success Story: Logo Design and WordPress Web Design for Lisa Rickwood

When Virtual Assistant Lisa Rickwood and I met at an Ali Brown’s Shine Event in 2009, we knew we were going to work together on her new website! When the time came, Lisa’s business focus had shifted and not only was she ready for a new custom WordPress website, she was ready for a rebrand.

Lisa Rickwood WordPress Website Design

Due to the brand equity and brand recognition Lisa had already built around her business, she was keeping her business name the same but shifting the focus from pure Virtual Assistance to Business Stress Relief and Relaxation consulting with a focus on creativity and art. This shift would allow Lisa to meld her artistic talents with her business!

Success Story: Custom WordPress Website for Magdalena Bogart Interiors

 Magdalena Bogart Interiors WordPress Website

Bourn Creative designed and built a clean, simple, custom WordPress theme for Magdalena Bogart of Magdalena Bogart Interiors to show off her beautiful portfolio images.

With a streamlined, landscape homepage that uses a rotating image slideshow, this interior design website needed to fit Magdalena’s design style, give her control over her own site, and allow her to showcase her work, passion and talent online.

The site also needed to include a blog, without looking like a typical blog side with a crowded and cluttered sidebar and stuff everywhere! As a result, much of the Magdalena Bogart Interiors website uses a full width template without a sidebar, while the template used for the blog does use a sidebar. The different options allow her to segment her site by goal and purpose of the page.

Success Story: WordPress Website and Newsletter for Doug Hecker

Doug Hecker WordPress Website Design

Earlier this year we worked with Retail Business Expert Doug Hecker to design a new custom WordPress Website, email newsletter template, social media brand design, CD label and 3D graphic, and a special report cover design and interior formatting among other things.

We tend to work with a lot of women, so working with Doug was fun! One of the interesting things about this site is the header. The option you see in the screen shot shows the opt-in on the left and Doug’s logo and photo on the right.

We actually programmed three different options for the header into this theme – the one shown in the screenshot, one with the elements flipped, and one that leverages a video in the header instead of the logo and photo! This way Doug could test the different headers over time to see which one converted best for his audience.
