Have you noticed that you are only seeing updates in your news feed from the same people lately? Have you also noticed that when you post things, the same circle of people are commenting and everyone else seems to be ignoring you?

When Linking Your Website to Social Media Sites is Bad

January 25, 2011 by Jennifer Bourn | 3 Comments

That’s right. Linking to your website to social media sites is bad… Sometimes. Think about it. Each link to your Facebook page, LinkedIn profile, Twitter profile, YouTube channel, Flickr gallery, and even your RSS feed is a link OFF of your website…

Each link I am showing below is an opportunity for you to LEAVE my website!

You work so hard to drive traffic to your website and get your audience to visit your website. Then, once they get there, you’re giving them multiple opportunities to leave your site – and if you’re selling something, each link to a social networking site is an opportunity to lose a sale.

Linking your website to social media sites provides the visitors you worked so hard to recruit multiple opportunities to leave without opting-in, signing up, or buying

Now I’m not saying the links shouldn’t be there at all… But I want to reinforce how important it is for you to think about where your social media links are on your website and how you use them.

You need to take into consideration the placement of your social networking and social media profile links…

Your Business Bio Needs Serious Help!

January 14, 2011 by Jennifer Bourn | 11 Comments

Confused Business BioI’ve been spending a lot of time lately reading business bios.

I’m reading up on the people who joined the same mastermind group I did this year and I’m reading a lot of bios on Facebook while I finish sorting all of my “friends” into Facebook lists.

I am AMAZED at how many bios I read that leave me totally confused.

I read the description of what they do, then read it again, and I am left thinking, “That sounds great, but what does that mean and what do you do?”

Over and over I am reading bios that, while they sound warm and fuzzy or creative, don’t really tell me anything… I just wish I could say, “Your business bio needs help!”

When I am reading a business bio, I am looking for a few key pieces of information:

Barbies, Legos, and 10 Days to Clarity About My Business in 2010

January 7, 2011 by Jennifer Bourn | 36 Comments

Clarity About My BusinessIf you read a lot of blogs, or subscribe to a lot of email newsletters, you probably noticed the large glut of year-end blog posts recapping the blog’s posts from 2010, reflecting on the past year, or talking about what they are going to do in 2011.

I refrained from that crowded blogging space for a few reasons:

  • Last year was a crazy year for me with a lot of changes, good things, and I’ll be honest, some not so good things – including a mistake that cost me $13K.
  • I wasn’t really sure what I wanted to write. I wasn’t sure how to sum up my 2010 or what I wanted to say about it. I had no clarity about what I really accomplished in my business in 2010
  • I didn’t double my income. I didn’t make five or six figures in one day. I didn’t triple my list size. I didn’t write a book or launch a product.

Then I took at ten day break and everything changed.

How to Link Your Facebook Profile Employer Link to The Right Facebook Page

January 4, 2011 by Jennifer Bourn | 13 Comments

I recently switched over to the new Facebook profile (I had been resisting) and some of the new changes really bother me – one in particular. In the profile information listed at the very top of the profile, Facebook automatically generates a link to a page for your employer.

This meant that Bourn Creative, LLC linked to a blank page that Facebook created – not my actual Bourn Creative page on Facebook. In the screenshot below you can see the same is happening on Brian’s Facebook profile where he lists our company name as Bourn Creative.

How to Change Your Employer Link in Your Facebook Profile to Link to Your Real Facebook Page

I tried to edit my employer information and I couldn’t change the name of the business and there was no place to edit the URL that the employer’s name links to, or to add a different URL.

Our Facebook articles like Help Readers Share Content with Facebook, How to Create a Facebook Page For Your Business, and How to Market on Facebook Using Lists have been hugely popular, which means you like this content… So here’s exactly how to change that link:

Help Readers Share Content with Facebook

December 4, 2010 by Jennifer Bourn | 1 Comment

Invite Others to Share Your Content on FacebookEver wonder how some people include links and images right in their content inviting you to share their email or web page with your friends on Facebook?

Wouldn’t it be nice if you could easily help your readers share content with Facebook and include an image and text snippet?

When emailing your list, you can ask your readers to share your content on their Facebook wall right from your email or, you can do it on a web page, sales page, or landing page. (This works great to help spread the word about your teleclasses, webinars, and events.)

How to Create a Facebook Page for Your Business

July 29, 2010 by Jennifer Bourn | 5 Comments

how to create a facebook page for businessSeveral business do one thing that absolutely drives Facebook users crazy and it is using a Facebook Personal Profile for their business instead of a Facebook Business Page, which is what a business page is meant for.

Now I know the idea seems simple enough, and easy to understand, but for some reason I continue to receive Facebook Friend Requests from businesses as I am sure you do as well.

Look – I can’t be a friend to a business offline, but I can like a business and be a fan of the business. Facebook operates the same way. People use profiles, businesses use business pages.

Note to businesses: Using a profile for your business means you created a FAKE PERSON and a FAKE PROFILE. A Business doesn’t have a first name and last name. A business doesn’t have a birthday. A business is not a person, so please don’t fake like it is. You can be reported for creating a fake profile and you run the risk of having the profile shut down and frankly irritating other people.

So why are so many businesses using Facebook incorrectly? Well, I truly believe that it’s not their fault. It’s because Facebook doesn’t make the information about creating a business page easy to find and they confuse people further by referring to Facebook Business Pages as Business Profiles in several places! In fact, I get asked all the time from long-time Facebook users, “How do I create a Facebook Page for my Business?” and some of them have been using Facebook for years and can’t find the information.

In this post, I am going to clarify this whole topic for you and provide you step by step instructions on how to create a Facebook Business Page.

How To Hide Your Friend List On Your Facebook Profile

July 28, 2010 by Jennifer Bourn | 8 Comments

How do I Hide My Facebook FriendsI always say ask and you shall receive… and a friend of mine posed this question to me on Facebook just last night: “How can I hide my Friend List on my profile?”

Others ask me, “Why would I want to hide my Facebook Friend List from “Everyone” or even from my other friends.”

Well, to some Facebook has quickly yet another place for spammers to hijack email addresses and “harvest” friends.

How to Market on Facebook Using Lists

July 27, 2010 by Jennifer Bourn | 6 Comments

Lists to Manage Facebook FriendsUnless you live in the middle of nowhere with no TV or internet access, it is impossible not to have noticed all of the noise surrounding social media marketing, particularly Facebook.

Chances are, you have a Facebook profile, and maybe even a Facebook business page, and are trying to figure out how to remain social to build quality relationships, but still use it effectively for marketing.

While effective marketing on Facebook is a mystery to many entrepreneurs, one way that I manage my Facebook friends and who I market to on Facebook is by using lists.

Recently Facebook announced that it had reached 500 million users worldwide, up from 100 million from only two years ago, and at any given time I have around 4000-4500 Facebook friends linked to my profile. The number fluctuates as I accept new friend requests and quietly unfriend some other people.

Facebook friend lists have been the absolute best tool to help me manage my relationships on Facebook.
