Have you ever thought: “Oops I made a marketing mistake!” I sure have, although my private Oops tends to sound a bit more colorful and shouldn’t be repeated in front of kids!
If you’re an entrepreneur, you’ve probably had the same experience more than you care to admit. Sometimes $H!T HAPPENS, you make a mistake, and there is nothing you can do about it but learn from the experience and move on.
Once I read that a mistake is only a mistake if it is done twice – otherwise it’s just a lesson to be learned. I absolutely love this because everyone, even the big gurus, make mistakes with their business and their marketing.
No one is perfect and you shouldn’t try to live up to the standards of perfection. It only causes stress and frustration.
Want to know the marketing mistake I made today? I was wrapping up my ezine to send out this morning, was talking with the kids about their schedule for the day, and in my multi-tasking mistake, accidentally send out my ezine before I was ready.
Yep. I freaked. But then I quickly realized that there wasn’t anything I could do about it. My ezine went out this morning with a great article on marketing features vs. benefits and a complete how-to section outlining the effective process I use myself to outline the features, benefits, and results for each offering we make. Unfortunately, my ezine also went out before I could proofread it. DANG!
I did get a few emails pointing out the typos and all but one were very nice. Feedback is always appreciated. But it’s still a bummer and a lesson learned.
Luckily, I’ve had some experience at making mistakes while marketing my business. For example, I have:
When you do a lot of marketing, these things are bound to happen at some point. You just need to keep your watchful eye out and minimize the chance of them happening as much as possible.
But when you do make a mistake, own up to it, admit it, learn the lesson that was put
in front of you, and get used to it.
How about you? Have you ever made a marketing mistake? If you say no… I think you’re a big fat liar :)

Thanks for sharing! I love the line about a mistake being a learning experience the first time. So true! My first two years in business, I used to ask my husband, “When do they stop being ‘learning experiences’ and start being ‘I know what to do’ experiences?
Katrina – I think the mistake/lesson learned cycle will continue as long as we’re in business! I love that you called them “I know what to” experiences :) Thanks for stopping by!
Jennifer thank you for validating that we are human and do make mistakes. I too have been caught in that multi-tasking mom mode while composing emails and have had those oops moments (like sending an email with a comment “yes I packed your lunch, it’s on the counter” lol.
Joy – It always seems like these things happen when we attempt to multi-task. Yes, the best results come when we are truly focused and they come faster, but heck, we humans sometimes forget that! Appreciate your comment!
I once made a mistake… I emailed 200+ people an invitation to participate in a beta but instead of starting with the salutatory, it started with my first name! Every single email started with “Charles,”
I was dismayed, but after a few deep breadths I started a new email that began, “Oops, you’re not Charles!” People seemed to like the light hearted admission and I received more responses from that campaign than ever before… or since!
Make lemonade out of your lemons!

OK, I admit I saw the mistakes and wondered as it’s not like you … and left it at that. What I like most is you sharing with us so we know it’s okay to make a mistake, and what to do afterwards.
Tina – I was horrified! I knew my fabulous and loyal subscribers would notice and several even replied with comments like, “UhOh Did you click send before you were ready?” They then shared similar stories about the same thing happening to them. That, I have to admit, made me feel a lot better!
